According to Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves, Romelu Lukaku might be the solution to Chelsea’s goal-scoring issues under Graham Potter.
Romelu Lukaku had two goals in his last two games for Inter Milan, drawing analogies to Chelsea, who under Graham Potter are having a terrible time scoring goals.
Romelu Lukaku, dubbed “Chelsea’s goal machine,” has recently received calls for Graham Potter to reinstate him despite his ongoing fitness difficulties.
The 29-year-old has only made 14 appearances this season due to injuries, and club director Beppe Marotta has claimed the former Manchester United star is overweight.
In August 2021, Lukaku returned to Chelsea for a then-club record transfer fee of £97.5 million. The Belgian striker agreed to a five-year, £350,000 per week contract, but the Blues were disappointed with the results.
Injuries have plagued the 29-year-old this season after he returned to Inter on loan in June.
Nonetheless, he has had an impact since making a comeback from injury, scoring in his last two games, one in the Champions League against Porto and the other in Serie A against Udinese.
His goals come at a time when his parent club is experiencing significant problems and Graham Potter’s team is in dire need of goals.
In as many Premier League games, Chelsea has only scored 23 goals, and Ferdinand and Hargreaves believe that if Lukaku were to return over the summer, that would help.
Ferdinand added on BT Sport, “If he can get fit again, this guy is proven to be a goalscorer, simple as that. I believe that he deserves a chance.
Because [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang isn’t even on the European team, you don’t currently have anyone in there that you can trust.
This guy just knows how to score goals; he’s a goalscorer. He comes in and scores two goals in the last two games despite being unfit and a little heavier than usual—more than what he would like and what the team would like.”
The question of whether Lukaku’s Chelsea career was over was then posed to Hargreaves. “No chance,” he responded.
“Especially because they invested £600 million and still need a center-forward. They have an extremely strong one. Simply make him fit; he is capable.
Rio is correct; he has a goal-scoring resume. Why not try to reintegrate him during the summer?”
Under Todd Boehly, Chelsea has spent lavishly in the last two transfer windows, bringing in players like Enzo Fernandez, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badashile, Raheem Sterling, and Kalidou Koulibaly.
However, they have had trouble scoring goals. In their last 15 games in all competitions, the Blues have only won two of them, and Potter’s team has only scored six goals throughout that dismal stretch.
