Scott McTominay is reportedly wanted by Newcastle, but Manchester United wants to keep the Scotland international.
McTominay, 26, has two and a half years left on his current contract, which United can choose to extend by an additional 12 months. The midfielder, who has appeared in 19 games for Erik ten Hag this year, is regarded as a valuable teammate.
Newcastle is attempting to grow its squad in an effort to play in Europe. Eddie Howe’s team is two points ahead of Tottenham in fifth place in the Premier League standings. For Newcastle this season, a top-six finish would be considered a success.
Since making his Manchester United debut in May 2017, Scott McTominay has appeared in 189 games. Newcastle, a contender in the Premier League, is reportedly interested in signing him.
The Newcastle recruitment team admires McTominay, according to the Mail, but the Red Devils don’t want to let him leave in January. Given that they are tied with Howe’s winning squad in terms of points, United will undoubtedly consider Newcastle as a rival.
Before a Saudi-backed consortium completed a takeover in October 2021, which made Newcastle United one of the richest clubs on the planet, they were among the favorites to be relegated last season.
Success in the Premier League is the new owners’ goal. Newcastle director Amanda Staveley told Sky Sports that her team “deserves to be at the top of the Premier League.”
“We need to arrive there. Though it will take some time, we shall succeed. Naturally, we want to see it win those awards but winning championships requires perseverance, money, and time. To make the club what it needs to be, we want everyone to collaborate with us.”
When the deal was finished, Newcastle was in the relegation zone and needed to assemble a team that could survive there. Howe swiftly took over as manager from Steve Bruce, and various players were added throughout the ensuing transfer window.
Those that joined Newcastle in January 2021 included Kieron Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn, and Matt Targett, who helped the team easily survive and place 11th in the standings.
They weren’t seen as dazzling signings but rather as prudent ones. In the summer, players including Nick Pope, Sven Botman, and Alexander Isak moved to St James’ Park, reinstating the transfer policy.
A comparable acquisition would be McTominay, who isn’t thought of as one of United’s most glamorous players.
If and when Newcastle qualifies for the Champions League, it will be expected that they will sign seasoned, world-class players.
Howe has acknowledged that the Magpies must take financial fair play into account and that this will affect their preparations for January.
